Water Service Restored Throughout Lynnfield Center Water District Following Significant Water Main Break

Customers Advised of What They Should and Should Not Do Immediately Following Restoration

LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Center Water District reports that service has been restored and the system is working toward being stabilized following a significant leak that began early this morning.

As of approximately 3 p.m., the leak in the area of Summer Street near Reedy Meadow Golf Course had been repaired. At its peak, the water main break resulted in the loss of approximately 3,000 gallons per minute, and an estimated 250,000 gallons of water was lost prior to it being completely repaired.

The water main break occurred between 3-5 a.m. today.

Due to the size of the leak, water pressure and discoloration issues could be expected system-wide, while customers in the immediate area were without service temporarily.

Customers should be mindful of these important tips as the system stabilizes itself.

DO

• Turn on cold water first and let it run until it is clear, ideally from an outdoor water spigot.
• Although water is safe to drink, avoid drinking the water if it is discolored.
• Flush your toilet several times to clear discolored water from the tank.

DO NOT

• Run your hot water or dishwasher until the water is clear
• Use your washing machine until the water is clear
• Use your hot water until your water is running clear. If you accidentally do use your hot water while it remains discolored, you may have to completely flush the hot water tank to clear out the discoloration. There is a possibility that the water heater can become damaged.
