Town of Littleton and its Police and Fire Departments Invite Community to Ceremony Marking 20th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks 

LITTLETON — The Town of Littleton, including Town Administrator Anthony M. Ansaldi Jr., Police Chief Matthew J. Pinard, and Interim Fire Chief Thomas Clancy would like to invite the public to a 9/11 Memorial Service in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the nation.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 outside the Littleton Fire Station, 20 Foster St.

“It has been two decades since horror and tragedy brought our nation and community together,” Town Administrator Ansaldi said. “We hope the community will once again join us as we take time out to ensure we never forget what was lost that day.”

Town Administrator Ansaldi will offer opening remarks, followed by a presentation of the colors by the Littleton Police and Fire Honor Guard, an invocation by the Rev. Jen Munroe-Nathans of the Congregational Church of Littleton, and the Pledge of Allegiance. 

The ringing of six bells will then mark key moments of Sept. 11, 2001:

• 8:46 a.m.: Hijackers deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into floors 93 through 99 of the North Tower.
• 9:03 a.m.: Hijackers deliberately crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 77 through 85 of the South Tower.
• 9:37 a.m.: Hijackers deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, near Washington, D.C.
• 9:59 a.m.: The South Tower collapsed.
• 10:03 a.m.: After learning of the other attacks, passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 launched a counterattack on hijackers aboard their plane to try to seize control of the aircraft. In response, the hijackers crashed the plane into an empty field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
• 10:28 am: The North Tower collapsed.

Following the ringing of the bells, the flag will be lowered, and taps will be played.

“Sept. 11 is a solemn day for first responders past and present and for all Americans,” Interim Fire Chief Clancy said. “We hold in our hearts the memories of our fallen brothers and sisters, and will never forget to honor their ultimate sacrifice.”

Chief Pinard, Chief Clancy, and Select Board Chair Chuck DeCoste will offer remarks. Rev. Munroe-Nathans will close with a convocation. Light refreshments will be offered following the event. 

Attendees are advised that the Town will observe any and all statewide COVID-19 protocols that are in effect on the day of the event, and residents are reminded that these protocols may change before next Saturday.

“Memories can often fade with time, but it is important that we work to ensure some sacrifices are never forgotten,” Police Chief Pinard said. “Please join us as we come together Saturday morning.”
