Sudbury Public Schools and Sudbury Extended Day Provide Update Following Employee’s Positive COVID-19 Test

SUDBURY– School Superintendent Brad Crozier and Sudbury Extended Day Director Suzie Kornblum report that the Sudbury Public Schools and Sudbury Extended Day (SED) are responding jointly after an SED employee tested positive for COVID-19.

Yesterday, while SED employees were doing preparation work at Josiah Haynes Elementary School, one of the three employees working developed COVID-19 symptoms and left work to seek medical attention. The Sudbury Public Schools and SED were notified this afternoon that the employee has tested positive for COVID-19, and as a result the two employees who worked with that individual yesterday were immediately sent home.

No students came into contact with the individual who tested positive. Sudbury Extended Day is an independent non-profit program that provides care for students that utilizes Sudbury school buildings before and after hours. At Haynes, 18 students are currently enrolled in the program.

School and district leadership are working in partnership with SED to respond to this situation. In accordance with district policy, the spaces where the extended day employees worked were tracked, thoroughly sanitized and closed for at least 12 hours. All Sudbury Public Schools will reopen tomorrow for classes as planned.

As a result of the positive test, Sudbury Extended Day programming at Haynes will be suspended for two weeks due to limited staffing.

“This is an unfortunate situation, and we wish this employee well as they recover,” Superintendent Crozier said. “We had an otherwise strong return to in-person learning today, and we’re confident that we are taking all the proper and necessary steps, as outlined in our reopening plan, to keep students and staff safe while remaining engaged in school.”
