NEWBURYPORT — Mayor Donna D. Holaday announces that applications are now being accepted for the Newburyport Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Alliance, a new coalition that will focus on racial equity issues in the city.

The Alliance will be a collaborative effort focused on developing measurable and attainable goals for a sustainable community plan on racial justice. The group will carry out a thorough review of city policies, services, and ordinances to identify inequities in community systems, and develop clear recommendations, including ways in which success will be measured. The Alliance will also organize training opportunities and community conversations on DEI topics as well.

“We are proud to invite stakeholders to take part in this city-wide initiative to show that Newburyport does not tolerate racism, and embraces diversity and inclusion,” Mayor Holaday said. “We’ve dedicated funding to work on equity issues internally as well as community wide and the Alliance will play a pivotal role in creating a racial equity action plan to facilitate and make meaningful change in Newburyport.”

Those interested in applying must submit a resume and a cover letter that answers the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be part of the Alliance?
  • What background, skills, or expertise do you bring to the Alliance?
  • What would you like to see this coalition accomplish?

In addition, applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a month of time related to DEI work.

Interested individuals should submit their applications by email to mayor@cityofnewburyport.com and include the subject heading “DEI Application”. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 25 at noon.

The goal is to assemble as broad and inclusive of an alliance as possible comprised of local political, religious, business, and community advocates. Emphasis will be placed on choosing members that represent a diversity of stakeholders, based on age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, education and income.

Newburyport residents will be prioritized in the selection process. However, non-resident stakeholders who are active members or employees of organizations, associations, and nonprofits in our community are also encouraged to apply and will be considered.
