Stoneham Police Announce Cancellation of Cops and Kids Fishing Derby Due to COVID-19

STONEHAM — Police Chief James McIntyre announces the cancellation of the annual Cops and Kids Fishing Derby scheduled for June 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

STONEHAM — Police Chief James McIntyre announces the cancellation of the annual Cops and Kids Fishing Derby scheduled for June 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Stoneham Police Department has hosted the annual event since 1999 on the second Saturday in June, in collaboration with the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Massachusetts Anglers Education Program.

“The Cops and Kids Fishing Derby is an event our community and officers look forward to every summer,” said Chief McIntyre. “While it is unfortunate to announce this decision, we believe it is best for the health and safety of Stoneham residents while the COVID-19 situation remains fluid.”

At past events, attendees learned to fish for free, and children participating in the derby received a t-shirt with an original design created by a Stoneham Middle School student. Families were treated to a barbecue lunch provided by the department and could participate in events to win prizes.

The Stoneham Police Department looks forward to next year, when it will host the 21st Annual Cops and Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 12, 2021.
