Lynnfield Center Water District to Begin Spring Hydrant Flushing Next Week

LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Center Water District will begin this year’s spring hydrant flushing on May 18 and work will continue through the end of the month.

The LCWD flushes the system twice a year in order to remove naturally occurring buildups of iron and manganese that are present in groundwater.

Flushing will occur Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. While most of the flushing will be taking place in the Apple Hill, Chestnut and Lowell Street neighborhoods, residents are encouraged to check the LCWD website for the complete listing of street schedule dates and times for flushing.

Residents may experience low or even no water pressure while flushing is taking place on their streets. They may also notice that their home’s water is discolored for a few hours during or after flushing. That discoloration can be alleviated by running a high flow faucet until water runs clear.

Residents should also avoid doing laundry during the flushing period, and should check their water first by running cold water for a few minutes before starting their washing machine.

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, flushing is occurring approximately a month later than usual in order to ensure that staffing levels meet state requirements. LCWD crews may be assisted by crews from Weston and Sampson, an environmental design and consulting company, during the flushing program. LCWD remains committed to flushing as many areas of the system most prone to higher levels of iron and manganese as the water supply allows.
