MAYNARD — Town Administrator Greg Johnson reports that the personal property tax deadline for businesses has been deferred to June 1 and the town is waiving related late fees through June 30.

The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday night during a remotely held meeting to defer the deadline for personal property tax payments for businesses from May 1 to June 1. Selectmen also voted to waive late fees related to the personal property tax bills through June 30.

Businesses that have not paid their personal property tax will not pay interest or penalties if they pay their bill prior to June 30, and Town staff recommend businesses submit payment by June 29 to ensure it is processed by June 30.

“COVID-19 has had a tremendous impact on the economy, and small businesses in particular face steep challenges as a result of mandated closures, service limitations and uncertainty regarding when they may be able to reopen their doors,” Town Administrator Johnson said. “The Board of Selectmen hope this deferment period will alleviate some of the hardship our local businesses are currently navigating.”

The Economic Development Committee recommended the deferment of the deadline and waiving of late fees to offer support to the business community during the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.

The deferral of interest and penalties will apply to 170 businesses who have not yet paid the personal property tax bill.

The Office of Municipal Services has also temporarily lifted signage restrictions to support businesses as they advertise new offerings or new procedures for access to products and services. During the ongoing state of emergency due to COVID-19, the Building Commissioner will be allowing up to two A-frame signs with a maximum area of six square feet on each side.

The Town of Maynard has compiled additional resources to assist businesses and nonprofits, which can be accessed here. For general updates from the Town of Maynard pertaining to COVID-19, click here
