Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Provide Update on COVID-19

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — Chief Todd J. Fitzgerald wishes to provide residents with an update on Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department operations during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

There has not been a spike in calls to the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department since the start of the COVID-19 public health crisis, and Police have not seen an increase in any types of calls. However, Officers will continue to work 12-hour shifts until at least May 19.

Normally, shifts are eight hours. This change was made to eliminate one shift change each day, promote social distancing for those working, and allows the officers to work for a week and then have a week off to rest. This also keeps reserve patrol officers off the schedule so that they can be used as replacements in the event full-time officers are unable to work due a quarantine order or illness.

As always, please call 911 for any emergency. 

Officers at the department continue to remain healthy and are responding to calls as normal. Through numerous donations from residents and three shipments from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), supplies of both PPE and cleaning supplies remain stocked at the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department, helping to keep both officers and residents safe.

Police responding to calls may also be seen wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, face masks or gloves, as a precaution, as well as practicing social distancing when possible. 

“Thank you to everyone for their cooperation and support as the situation COVID-19 has progressed,” Chief Fitzgerald. “We’ve been very fortunate to receive numerous PPE and food donations from residents over the last few weeks, and we’re incredibly grateful for these kind gestures.”

Residents are asked to call the Manchester-by-the-Sea to complete any non-emergency business and some police reports over the phone.

Pick Up and Delivery Service

The Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department continues to offer pick-up and delivery services for residents identified as higher risk of serious health complications should they contract the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) or for those who are self-quarantined. This includes the delivery of groceries, prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines and vital supplies.

Individuals who have been identified as being at a higher risk and advised to avoid large crowds are older adults or anyone with chronic medical conditions, like heart disease, diabetes or lung disease.

Manchester-by-the-Sea Police officers are able to pick up and deliver items like food, medicine and other vital supplies for those who do not feel comfortable going out to do so. Officers will be unable to pay for the items, however. Items will be delivered to the front door of the home, and officers will not enter the home. Residents will be notified when the officer arrives so they can get the items immediately.
