Statement Regarding Outbreak at CareOne

Director of Health and Human Services Dr. Swannie Jett wishes to provide the following statement:

“We are aware of at least 45 positive cases of COVID-19 at CareOne in Brookline, out of 87 residents. Of the 16 Brookline residents who have died so far due to COVID-19, 14 were residents at CareOne. Thirteen staff members have also been infected.

“We are deeply saddened by the deaths and will continue to offer support to CareOne and the community as the COVID-19 emergency continues.

“Our team has also been made aware of — and has expressed concern — about CareOne admitting new residents, though we support CareOne’s efforts to assist hospitals’ ability to care for patients with more dire needs as a result COVID-19.

“CareOne has been evaluated for infection control by Massachusetts General Hospital and passed the internal inspection. In addition, CareOne has agreed to continue weekly inspections for infection control while they admit new patients in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

“The impact this has had on CareOne’s residents, who are among those most at-risk of serious illness and death due to this virus, is absolutely heartbreaking, and we have offered whatever support and resources we can to mitigate the impacts on this facility in particular, in addition to our community at-large.”
