RAYMOND — Superintendent Tina McCoy and Principal Laura Yacek would like to share the following video made by the Lamprey River Elementary School Counseling Team, which shows uplifting and supportive messages to students at the school.
The video shows LRES teachers posing with messages encouraging students to stay positive, work hard, stay strong and remember that they are not alone.
As part of the ongoing school closure, the Counseling Team created a weekly social-emotional learning lesson for all students based on the book, “The Invisible String” by Patrice Karst. Staff felt it was an especially timely story to share with students given current community concerns.
In the book, two siblings are coping with a scary time, but through the power of the Invisible String — the connections that bind us together over time and space — they are able to feel better.
Students listened to a read-aloud of the book and completed their own Invisible String activity, challenging them to identify all of the connections that they have: people in their home or far away, people at school and people in their community.
The Counseling Team created the video as a complement to the lesson, as staff felt it was critical to give students a concrete example of their in-school connections. The messages from staff served as positive, encouraging reminders to students, reinforcing the idea that we are all still connected during this period of remote learning.
“We know that students learn best and thrive when they feel connected to school staff,” said LRES School Counselor Jennifer Hayes. “During the period of remote learning, maintaining positive student-staff relationships is more important than ever.”
Since being published the video has been shared on the LRES Facebook page and has received a great deal of positive feedback.
“I am so proud of our entire staff for continuing to come up with creative ways of connecting and sharing positive messages with our students and families,” Principal Yacek said. “This time has been difficult for all, but we are getting through it together as an entire school community.”
