WHITMAN — Chief Timothy J. Grenno is pleased to share that the Whitman Fire Department received N95 masks and other personal protective equipment from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) last week.

On Friday, April 3, the Massachusetts National Guard delivered 100 N95 masks on behalf of MEMA to the Whitman Fire Department. Earlier last week, the department also received 100 face shields and 1000 pairs of gloves from MEMA.

Additionally, the department received funds, 200 gowns and 200 surgical masks from the Southeastern Massachusetts EMS Council.

First responders will use the equipment to protect them from exposure to the virus as they respond to calls involving people who may be reporting symptoms in line with COVID-19 or may have been in contact with a positive COVID-19 case. As the virus continues to spread, the department aims to keep personnel healthy to continue to serve the community.

“We are grateful to have received these supplies given the shortage of personal protective equipment under our current circumstances,” said Chief Grenno. “To properly administer care to our community, we need this gear to protect not only ourselves but our residents as well. This delivery will allow us to have a sufficient supply of the necessary protection when dealing with a possible or confirmed COVID-19 patient.”

The equipment will be issued to fire personnel as needed as the COVID-19 situation continues to develop.
