NORWOOD — The Town of Norwood would like to inform residents that businesses regarded as “non-essential” in the effort to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) must end all in-person operation, following an emergency order issued by Governor Charlie Baker Monday.

Effective Tuesday, March 24 at noon, companies that do not provide essential services related to COVID-19 must close all facilities to employees and customers. This order will remain in effect until April 7 at noon.

A full list of designated organizations that provide essential services and workforces related to COVID-19 has been outlined by the state, and these organizations may continue to operate their brick-and-mortar facilities during this two-week period.

Essential COVID-19 services include:

  • Health Care & Public Health
  • Law Enforcement, Public Safety & First Responders
  • Food & Agriculture
  • Critical Manufacturing, Chemical Manufacturing & Hazardous Materials
  • Transportation
  • Energy, Water & Wastewater organizations, and Public Works
  • Communications and Information Technology
  • Financial Services
  • Defense Industry Base
  • News Media
  • Other Designated Community Based Essential Function & Government Operations

Local businesses in industries not included in the above list are encouraged to continue operations remotely, if possible.

Restaurants and bars may remain operational, but should open only for delivery or takeout services through April 6, and should continue to follow social distancing protocols. Takeout and delivery patrons are urged to call ahead or place their orders online with restaurants and eateries in order to minimize face-to-face interaction and streamline the pickup process.

The Town of Norwood also advises residents to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel and other activities, following a stay-at-home advisory issued today by the Department of Public Health. Individuals considered to be high risk when exposed to COVID-19, including those over 70 years of age or with any underlying health conditions, should limit social interaction as much as possible.

Social distancing practices will help to minimize exposure among people. Today’s order also limited gatherings of 10 people or less, a reduction from the previous 25 person limit. This order does not prohibit gatherings of 10 or more in outdoor spaces such as parks or athletic fields, but people should refrain from activities such as touch football or other pick-up sports that occur in large groups.

The full list of essential services is based on federal guidance, but has been amended to reflect the state’s unique economy. An Essential Service Designation Request form is available for company’s who would like to request the services of their business to be designated as essential during this time.
