Town of Canton Announces Local Emergency Declaration in Response to Public Threat Caused by Coronavirus

CANTON — The Canton Board of Selectmen announces that the Town of Canton has issued a Local Declaration of Emergency, effective immediately, to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 within the community.

With this decision, the town now has the ability to expend funds without budget allocation, request state resources as necessary and address emergency conditions as they come up.

As a precautionary measure, all town buildings will be closed to the public until further notice, except the police station. The Canton Police and Fire Departments will respond to emergency calls for service as normal. The Fire Department will temporarily suspend walk-in, non-emergency services. Residents are asked to contact the business line at 781-821-5095 or send an e-mail for non-emergencies.

The Police Department will continue to allow necessary walk-in, non-emergency services.

Public Health Nurse Cindy Bonner has been working closely with the Canton Police and Fire Departments, Building Inspections, Council on Aging and Department of Public Works to ensure proper procedures are put into place for emergency response and services.

Active Town Closures and Cancellations

The following will be closed until further notice:

• All non-essential board and committee meetings are cancelled.
• Canton Public Schools are closed through at least April 7.
• The Council on Aging Senior Center is closed and activities are cancelled.
• Recreation activities and events are cancelled.
• The Canton Public Library is closed.
• The Pine St. recycling facility is closed.

Canton Town Hall and town offices are closed to the public effective immediately. Town buildings and offices will continue to operate with essential personnel only. Offices will be available via the town’s website citizen portal tool, email and telephone.

At this time, the Council on Aging will continue to provide Meals on Wheels and transportation for food shopping and counseling to senior residents.

The Town of Canton has also created a COVID-19 task force made up of various sectors within the town. This task force is communicating and meeting regularly to monitor the spread of the virus and pass on important health and safety information in an effort to keep Canton’s citizens informed.
