RAYMOND, N.H. — Superintendent Tina McCoy and Principal Laura Yacek are pleased to announce that students at Lamprey River Elementary School celebrated a week of reading recently with several activities taking place in classrooms throughout the school.
Activities were held in honor of Read Across America Week, as well as Dr. Seuss’ birthday on Monday, March 2. The week also included spirit week at the school.
Students wore wacky costumes while guest readers shared their favorite books with the students. Hands-on literacy activities included reading silly stories, sharing favorite books, arts and crafts, and more. Trivia questions were read over the daily announcements with fun prizes handed out to winners.
“Read Across America Week allows our community to celebrate a love of reading and to share our excitement about books and stories with others in a meaningful and engaging way,” said Keri Watts, LRES Reading and Writing Specialist. “The excitement is contagious, and was evident as students stopped in the hallways to check on their favorite books or read stories that others classrooms created together.”
LRES also hosted a family literacy night on Thursday, March 5, filled with reading games, competitive rounds of Bingo, and more.
“This was the greatest turnout we have had for family night,” said Library Media Specialist Abigail Samsel. “I hope we continue this tradition moving forward and see even more families next time.”
Author and illustrator Michelle Nelson-Schmidt also visited the school, presenting paintings and books to all grade levels and sharing her struggles to overcome obstacles in her career. Her visit inspired students to strive for their goals.
“We hope this entire week has inspired and encouraged our students to continue reading as well as share their excitement for reading with friends and family,” Principal Yacek said. “Parents are encouraged to reach out to our teachers, reading specialists and library staff for more activities and resources to promote reading at home.”
