RANDOLPH — A group of Randolph High School students partnered with the Randolph Fire Department to present fire and life safety tips to local elementary school students this week.
Randolph Fire Lt. Joseph Messia, Capt. Michael Austrino, Firefighter Cheri Patten and Firefighter Kristopher Kronillis visited all four of Randolph’s elementary schools on Tuesday alongside 20 Randolph High School students. Together, they gave safety tip presentations that the students crafted as part of a project for the First Responders Course at Randolph High School.
The students created their own Public Fire and Life Safety Education (PFALSE) presentations, teaching fifth graders at the town’s four elementary schools –Margaret L. Donovan Elementary School, John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Elizabeth G. Lyons Elementary School and Marin E. Young Elementary School — lessons in electrical safety, kitchen safety, first aid, fire science, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and exit and escape plans.
“This assignment is a great learning experience for our high school students. They use this time to gain experience in creating lessons, delivering information, public speaking, and building confidence,” said Lt. Messia. “Our high school students did a wonderful job interacting with the fifth graders and they were able to share some valuable information.”
The First Responder Class is offered to junior and senior students at Randolph High School. Over the course of the full-year elective, students earn approximately 300 hours of public safety experience in firefighting, police and EMS work.
Students in the course also have the opportunity to help teach CPR training classes throughout the community.
