WHAT:

Students have been preparing and rehearsing for Whittier’s production of “Pippin” since January, every day after school.

“Overall this is a labor of love and dedication,” said Linda Urban, Whittier’s music director. “Preparing a full length musical requires many hours of long rehearsals and the kids have been rising to the challenge.  We all look forward to our opening night.”

Students taking part in the production include 34 cast members, one student costumer and seven crew members.

The production is part of an extra-curricular club, and many students in music and art classes at Whittier are also involved either on stage or behind the scenes. Students performing in the production are also learning choreography from the production’s choreographer, Jessica Beale, and student choreographer, Zach DePaolo, who is also playing the role of Pippin in the production.

“I’m excited,” DePaolo said. “I honestly think it’s gonna be one of the best shows performed here.”

“I have never thought I would do this much dancing and I love it,” said Ana Barrera, who will play the role of Ambrosia in the production. “I’m so happy to be so involved and the show is very fun. We all feel like a big family and it’s fun to work with each other.”

Students in Whittier’s carpentry department crafted the set, which includes multiple levels and towers. The school’s art department assisted with set design and painted set pieces and props, and the cosmetology department will apply stage make-up and style hair for the show.

“It’s a fun experience being able to help with makeup and costumes this year,” said Alexis Smith, who will perform the role of Hortensia in the show. “The cast is working hard on a very technical show that requires 110% and doing an amazing job at it.”
