WAKEFIELD — The Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth will be holding the “Fighting Hate & Homegrown Violent Extremism” conference in Southbridge later this month.
“This conference will help educators and law enforcement professionals learn how to work collaboratively to identify and address instances of extremism and violence in their community,” MPY Executive Director Margie Daniels said. “This will contribute to fostering safe and supportive schools and communities.”
WHEN:
Thursday, March 26 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
WHERE:
La Salle Reception Center, 44 Main St., Southbridge.
WHO:
- Margie Daniels, Executive Director for the Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth
- Ronald Schouten, director of the Law & Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School
- Steve Kimball, Special Agent for the FBI Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force
- Brian LeBlanc, Supervisory Special Agent for the FBI Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force
- Jack Levin, Northeastern University Professor Emeritus and Co-Director of the Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict
WHAT:
Incidents of hate and violence from homegrown violent extremism have disrupted schools and communities across the nation. Extremist ideologies, such as Jihadism, Incel, Antifa and racially-motivated extremists such as White Nationals, create environments that stigmatize, frighten, disrupt and threaten school and community members. Presenters will share information about a wide range of radical groups, including how to identify them and recognize student involvement.
Ronald Schouten, Director of the Law & Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, will be the keynote speaker at the event. He will be joined by two agents from the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and a nationally acclaimed criminologist and expert in terrorism.
More than 100 educators and law enforcement officials are expected to attend the conference.
This conference is free of charge.
