Sudbury Public Schools to Host Forum on Homework

SUDBURY — Superintendent Brad Crozier is pleased to announce that the Sudbury Public Schools will host an education forum on homework next week.

Ephraim Curtis Middle School Auditorium

WHEN: 

Wednesday, March 4, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

WHAT: 

Parents are invited to attend an open forum on homework in the district, hosted by Victor Mercurio — an educator for more than 30 years who has served as a high school and district administrator. 

Mercurio will discuss best practices and research on the subject of homework, including balancing the positive impact it can have on student learning with the stress it can cause. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions as well.

The forum serves as a follow-up to a study completed by the Sudbury Public Schools in 2018, which resulted in revised homework guidelines for students in grades K-8. The new guidelines call for limits on the amount of time students should be spending on homework each night. 

The guidelines also limit homework to Monday-Thursday nights for students in grades K-5, and limits the amount of assignments students receive over the weekend while eliminating it on religious holidays. 

“This is a great opportunity for parents and members of the community to learn about the guiding principles behind homework from a subject matter expert,” Superintendent Crozier said.

Mercurio is the president of the Rhode Island School Superintendents’ Association and also serves as an associate professor in the Education Leadership Doctoral Program in the School of Education at Johnson and Wales University.
