WAKEFIELD — The Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth (MPY) will be holding the “The Care and Feeding of the Adolescent Brain: Insights from Neurology, Neuroscience, and Psychiatry” conference in Newton next month.

“By looking at how adolescent brains develop, participants can learn how to best drive their work with students and meet their needs,” said MPY Executive Director Margie Daniels “We look forward to hosting this conference as a part of our ongoing Mental Health Series.”

WHEN:

Friday, Feb. 28 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHERE:

Newton-Wellesley Hospital, 2014 Washington St., Newton.

WHO:

  • Margie Daniels, Executive Director of Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth
  • Dr. David K. Urion, Director of Behavioral Neurology Clinics and Programs at Boston Children’s Hospital

WHAT:

Attendees will learn about brain development in adolescence and how it can influence certain aspects of learning and behavior. Research on the impacts of substance use on the brain, as well as recommendations on managing educational needs for students recovering from a concussion, will also be shared.

“For years, it was thought that brain development stopped around 16 years of age. Nothing appears further from the truth,” Urion said. “It is the later development of brain systems that we will discuss, and how to use this knowledge to understand and adapt our interventions.”

More than 100 participants are expected to attend the event, including school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, school resource officers and administrators.

The cost is free for members and $100 for nonmembers.
