NEWMARKET — Superintendent Dr. Susan K. Givens is excited to announce a group of eight students will be traveling to New York next month to participate in the National High School Model United Nations conference.
Students from the Newmarket Junior/Senior High School will attend the conference from Wednesday, March 4 to Friday, March 7 in New York City with hundreds of their peers from across the U.S.
“I wish students all the best as they take part in this year’s competition, which is a truly once in a lifetime experience,” Superintendent Givens said. “I’m incredibly proud of the hard work they’ve done to prepare for the conference and can’t wait to see what they achieve.”
The conference features political simulations involving the United Nations and international politics. Students are assigned countries and tasked with advocating for their country’s interests by debating, forming alliances with other delegates and ultimately working to pass resolutions that advance their country’s goals. To prepare, students research their assigned topic and develop their positions based on the country’s interest.
Students will be judged on aspects of their work such as accuracy, quality and persuasiveness, and are eligible for both individual and group awards.
Actual diplomats will attend the opening and closing ceremonies for the event.
Last year’s team won the Best Small School award while attending the four-day conference in Philadelphia with nearly 600 other students from approximately 30 high schools.
Students Taylor Kenison and Mahammad Hajiyev won Best Delegate in their committee while representing Venezuela during last year’s conference.
