ANDOVER — Superintendent John Lavoie is excited to announce a new opportunity that allows cosmetology students from Greater Lawerence Technical School to give back to the community.

Fifteen women from the LARE Institute visited the cosmetology students on Wednesday, Feb. 5, receiving free hairstyles and manicures from the students. In all, 60 women will be visiting students from Wednesday, Feb. 5 through Friday, Feb. 7. A group will also visit students on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

With locations in Andover and Chelsea, the LARE Institute works with those who are unemployed, underemployed, at risk, have disabilities or have limited marketable or language skills to help them with workforce development, day habilitation, specialized housing plans and education.

The goal of the partnership is two-fold. For the women from LARE, the visit to GLTS sought to lift their confidence and self-esteem. For students, it allowed them to practice their cosmetology techniques, as well as their communication skills and ability to work as a team.

“The students were very enthusiastic while working with the women, and it was a great experience for the women to speak with the students,” said Cosmetology Lead Teacher Cecilia Smith. “I felt that, both the women and the students had an appreciation for each other.”

This is the first year that the LARE Institute has visited the GLTS Cosmetology Department. Going forward, the hope is to host women for a similar event at least once a year.
