Canton Fire and Police Departments to Offer “Canton Responds” Training Events for Residents

CANTON — Fire Chief Charles Doody and Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz are pleased to announce that the Canton Fire and Police Departments will host two events later this month to train residents how to respond in certain emergency situations. 

Based on the saying “See Something, Say Something,” these trainings will instead encourage residents to “See Something, Do Something” in situations where they may be able to save their own lives or the lives of others.

There will be two parts to the Canton Responds training event, one led by Canton Police and one led by Canton Fire.

Canton Police

The Canton Police training will take place on Thursday, Feb. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at the Canton Police Station, 1492 Washington St. 

The following topics will be covered in the police department’s training:

• Run, Hide, Fight: The recommended course of action in an active shooting event is to run, hide, fight. Attendees will learn from Canton Police officers how to run, hide and fight and when it makes the most sense to carry out each option. 
• Stop the Bleed: Attendees will learn the basic steps they can take to help someone who is experiencing significant blood loss after a traumatic event.

Following the training, attendees will be able to take a tour of the Canton Police Station. 

Canton Fire

The Canton Fire training will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 7-9 p.m. at the Canton Fire Department headquarters, 99 Revere St. 

The following topics will be covered in the fire department’s training:

• CPR: Attendees will learn the proper hand placement and timing to administer CPR to someone who isn’t breathing. 
• AED: Attendees will learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help someone who is experiencing cardiac arrest.
• NARCAN: Attendees will learn how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to administer NARCAN to an overdose victim.

The medical training sessions will be conducted by Brockton Hospital Emergency Department Physician Dr. Daniel Muse and a local resident.

Attendees will also receive a tour of the Canton Fire Department’s headquarters. 

You must be a Canton resident to attend the training sessions. Residents may choose to attend either the police or fire training, or both. To register, email CPDTraining@town.canton.ma.us.
