Hull’s Jacobs Elementary Hosts Pajama Story Hour for Preschool Students

HULL — Superintendent Michael Devine and Principal Christine Cappadona are pleased to share that Jacobs Elementary School hosted its annual Pajama Story Hour for incoming students earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, Jacobs Elementary invited preschoolers and their families to attend the second Pajama Story Hour held this school year. The event is one of the many kindergarten transition activities that Jacobs Elementary hosts in an effort to provide preschool students and their families the opportunity to explore the building, meet the families of other Jacobs Elementary students and introduce themselves to the staff and administrators.

“It’s amazing to see how much a story can affect these children,” said kindergarten teacher Chrissy Vittorini. “There’s something special about coming to school at night with your parents and in your pajamas. I believe this approach is a great way to get children acquainted with each other and comfortable in a new setting.”

Hull resident and children’s book author Jacqueline Veissid read her books, “Caspian Finds a Friend” and “Ruby’s Sword,” aloud to the 37 children, ages three to seven, who attended the event. The children wore their pajamas and many brought along their favorite stuffed animal.

“It’s so exciting to share my books with the wonderful students of Jacobs Elementary,” said Veissid.

Each story had props that went along with its plot. Veissid brought with her a stick that her daughter found which closely resembled the main character’s sword in “Ruby’s Sword,” and children waved their imaginary swords throughout the story.

“I liked the book Ruby’s Sword because she writes with her sword in the dirt,” said kindergarten student Hailey Mcloud.

To go along with the story “Caspian Finds a Friend,” Veissid brought a glass bottle with a message inside that was similar to the bottle thrown in the ocean by the main character of the book. Students guessed what the message inside the bottle said before Veissid read the message aloud.

“I liked Caspian Finds a Friend because I love polar bears,” said first-grader Anabella Dejesus.

In addition to her props, Veissid prepared several crafts for the children and their families to complete while they socialized with each other following the read-aloud. Each craft connected to one of her books.

At the event, “Caspian Finds A Friend” and “Ruby’s Sword” were also available for purchase at a table set up outside the Music Room by Buttonwood Books of Cohasset. During craft time families who purchased the books had the opportunity to have them signed by Veissid.

All families who attended the event were gifted “Caspian Finds A Friend” and “Ruby’s Sword” bookmarks.
