EXETER — Principal Patricia Wons is pleased to announce that the first transgender NCAA Division I men’s athlete will speak with seventh grade students at the Cooperative Middle School next month.

Groundbreaking athlete Schuyler Bailar
WHAT:
Schuyler Bailar is the first transgender athlete to compete in any sport on a NCAA Division I men’s sports team. When he was 15-years-old, he was ranked in the top 20 breast stroke swimmers for his age group nationwide. Two years later, he set a national record for his age group. While attending Harvard University, he helped the swim team have it’s most successful season in 50 years.
Since then, Bailar has become an internationally renowned inspirational speaker and inclusion advocate, sharing his story at public speaking events, and on shows like “60 Minutes” and “The Ellen Show”.
“We are so excited to host Schuyler and look forward to his talk with our students,” Principal Wons said. “I’m so proud of our seventh graders for their eagerness to learn about and be inspired by the experiences of others.”
Seventh grade students recently completed a research project on individuals — past and present — in American history who they found inspiring and shared their research with their classmates. Bailar was among those who CMS students learned more about.
After learning more about him, many students voiced that they found his story inspiring, noting that he embodies how you don’t have to give up on your dreams for yourself, and that his story helps teach empathy and understanding.
Seventh grade social studies teacher Sarah Wong and Library Media Specialist Dee Whall reached out to see if Bailar would be willing to share his story with students.
Parents and members of the community are welcome to attend.
