Burlington Police and Fire Departments Respond to Fatal House Fire

Media are asked to stage at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Scott Avenue. 

BURLINGTON — Fire Chief Michael Patterson and Police Chief Michael Kent report that the Burlington Fire and Police Departments responded to a residential house fire that resulted in the death of a person today.

At approximately 1 p.m., members of the Burlington Fire and Police Departments responded to 26 Maryvale Road for a report of a house fire with people still inside. Upon arrival, first responders found heavy smoke coming from the windows of the home and flames coming from the front window.

A male neighbor and delivery man helped an elderly woman escape the home prior to the fire department’s arrival. The woman was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries. The male delivery driver who helped her escape was also transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation, along with a Burlington police officer.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions inside the home, and attempted to locate a second resident inside but were unable to locate him due to the conditions. Firefighters continued working to knock down the flames, and a second alarm was struck early on in their attack on the fire.

Firefighters later located the man deceased inside. The victim is not being identified at this time.

The Billerica, Woburn and Bedford Fire Departments provided mutual aid at the scene, as well as Billerica paramedics and Armstrong Ambulance.

Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal have responded to the scene, as well as the town’s building inspector. The home has been destroyed by the fire.

Eversource has temporarily cut power to the home.

This incident is under investigation by the Burlington Fire and Police Departments and State Police assigned to both the Office of the State Fire Marshal and to the Middlesex County District Attorney.
