Resident-Led Initiative Results in Installation of New Bike Racks in Maynard

MAYNARD — Town Administrator Greg Johnson  and Town Planner Bill Nemser are pleased to announce that the Town of Maynard has installed 30 new bike racks throughout the community. 

The installation of 30 “post and circle” bike racks comes as the direct result of a resident-led initiative, spearheaded by Robin Schulman and Randy James, that emphasized the need for additional bicycle parking in town. 

Funding for the racks was made possible through the Business Environment Enhancement (BEEP) Grant. This Town-funded grant is available in several configurations, making it a flexible funding source both for businesses seeking exterior improvements, as well as for the community to support ideas that would improve the town’s overall business environment.

The bike racks were purchased at a discounted rate through the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and were installed by the Department of Public Works.

“With limited parking and the compact nature of Maynard, bicycling provides an ideal solution for creating more downtown road and parking space. Robin and Randy had a great idea and followed through on it for the benefit of the whole community,” Town Planner Nemser said.

“This is a great example of how the business environment can be improved by creative thinking,” said Economic Development Committee Chair Jack MacKeen. “The Assabet River Rail Trail will also bring more bicycle traffic from Acton and the availability of bicycle parking should encourage visitors to support our businesses and to return often.”
