Saugus Police Respond after Driver Crashes into Storefront

SAUGUS — Interim Chief Ronald Giorgetti reports that the Saugus Police Department is investigating after a car crashed through the entrance of a local restaurant early Saturday morning.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at 7:22 a.m., Saugus Police and Fire responded to Giovanni’s Roast Beef & Pizza located at 194 Broadway for a reported motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, first responders found a 2016 Mercedes Benz E350 had crashed roughly three-quarters the way into the front of the building.

Rescuers located the driver, a 57-year-old Melrose woman. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was evaluated at the scene but declined further medical attention. No one was inside the building at the time, as the business was closed.

Saugus Inspectional Services was called to the scene and arrived quickly. The business will not be allowed to reopen until any structural damage is assessed.

The incident is under investigation by the Saugus Police Department. An initial on-scene investigation indicates that the driver did not appear to be impaired and that human error or mechanical failure are the two most likely causes of the crash.

The Melrose Fire Department provided station coverage to Saugus during the incident.
