AMESBURY — Chief Kenneth E. Berkenbush reports that the Amesbury Fire Department responded to a serious crash on Interstate 495 this morning.

At 9:50 a.m., Amesbury Fire was dispatched to 495 Northbound prior to exit 55 for a report of a single-car crash. Upon arrival, firefighters located a car that had rolled over, struck the guardrail and came to rest on the grass median.

Firefighters worked quickly to extricate the lone occupant of the four-door sedan, who was subsequently transported by ambulance to Portsmouth Hospital with serious injuries. The Merrimac Fire Department also responded to the scene of the crash, while the Newburyport Fire Department provided station coverage.

As a result of the crash, motorists should expect heavy residual traffic on 495 and Route 110.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police.
