King Philip Hosts Hockomock Unified Track and Field Championships

WRENTHAM — Superintendent Paul Zinni is pleased to share that King Philip High School hosted the Hockomock Unified Track and Field Championships on Tuesday.

Approximately 300 students from 10 area high schools attended the event, including students from Attleboro, Canton, Foxboro, Franklin, King Philip, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Oliver Ames, Sharon and Taunton. Students took part in events including shot put, javelin, long jump, 100-meter , 400-meter, 800-meter, four by 100-meter relay and four by 400-meter relay.

Special Olympics Unified Sports teams provide opportunities for student athletes with and without mental and/or physical disabilities to train and compete together. At competitions, students are encouraged to do their best and no scores are kept.

“This meet was amazing and I was so glad to be a part of it,” said Matt Anderson, coach of the King Philip Unified Track Team. “Watching close to 300 athletes compete, cheer for each other, smile and laugh for the afternoon was an incredible experience for the KP Community and I am thankful that the Hockomock League chose us to host the Unified Championship this year.”

This is the first year King Philip has had its own Unified Track and Field team.

“It was a pleasure to Coach all of our athletes,” Anderson said. “I was highly impressed with all the hard work the athletes did this season and how much they improved from the start of the season until the final meet yesterday. The level of teamwork and camaraderie was great and I can’t wait to see how the program grows next year.”
