Chelmsford Police Arrest Man Following Armed Home Invasion
CHELMSFORD — Chief James Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department arrested a man following an armed home invasion this morning.
CEDRIC EDWARDS, AGE 45, OF DORCHESTER was arrested and charged with:
- Armed Home Invasion
- Armed Assault on a Dwelling
- Assault and Battery
- Strangulation
- Commission of a Felony While Armed
- Possession of a Firearm (Large Capacity)
- Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device
- Possession of Ammunition
At approximately 10:45 a.m., Chelmsford Police officers were dispatched to 180 Tyngsboro Road for a report of people screaming. While en route, officers were informed that a male suspect was fleeing toward Tyngsborough and may have been in possession of a firearm.
Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect, later identified as EDWARDS, fleeing toward the rear of 184 Tyngsboro Road and apprehended him after a brief foot pursuit.
EDWARDS was unarmed when he was taken into custody, so officers requested the assistance of their K-9 officer. K-9 Flacko subsequently led officers to a fully loaded handgun that had been discarded in heavy brush near where EDWARDS was arrested.
Officers also located clothing discarded by EDWARDS, and a box in his possession that contained zip tie handcuffs.
Through a subsequent investigation, officers determined that EDWARDS allegedly forced his way into the victim’s apartment at gunpoint before assaulting him. A neighbor called 911 after hearing the victim’s screams. EDWARDS and the victim are not known to each other.
EDWARDS was transported to an area hospital for complaints of a rapid heart rate following his arrest.
The victim sustained injuries that are not believed to be serious and refused medical attention.
“This was a violent and unprovoked assault, and I want to commend the officers who confronted this dangerous suspect and safely took him into custody,” Chief Spinney said. “We are confident that there is no threat to the community as a whole.”
