GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished a fire at a multi-family home early this morning.

At 2 a.m., the Gloucester Fire Department responded to 34 School St. on a report of a house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire in the first floor living room in the unit.

Residents at 34 School St. had evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival, and Gloucester Police assisted in evacuating the remaining two units, 32 Prospect st. #1 and #2, of the home.

Crews from Engines 1, 2, 3 and 4, along with Ladder 1 quickly put out the blaze. Two firefighters suffered injuries. They were transported to an area hospital, treated and released.

The unit at 34 School St. sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, while units 1 and 2 at 32 Prospect St. sustained smoke damage. Residents from all three units are currently displaced and are working with the American Red Cross to find housing.

During the fire, the Rockport Fire Department provided station coverage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Gloucester Fire Department.
