Methuen Police Provide Update Regarding Death of German Shepherd

Dog was Killed by Another Animal, Not Shot as Previously Reported

METHUEN — Mayor James Jajuga and Chief Joseph Solomon report that the Methuen Police Department has completed its investigation into the death of a German shepherd reported killed on Thursday, April 4.

The investigation determined that the dog was not shot, as previously suspected.

A necropsy examination performed by veterinarian Martha Smith-Blackmore of Forensic Veterinary Investigations LLC determined that the dog was killed in a mauling attack by one or more other dogs.

Dr. Smith-Blackmore noted in her report to the Methuen Police Department that it is not unusual for fatal dog-on-dog maulings to be mistaken for a gunshot injury.

The Methuen Police Department has presented the veterinary findings to the family in question, which has additional dogs in the household. Police will offer resources and advice to the family on next steps. The criminal investigation is considered closed.
