Armstrong Ambulance and NEMLEC Partner for “Stop The Bleed” Training

ARLINGTON — Armstrong Ambulance Service’s Special Operations Division and its partner Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) will be conducting hemorrhage control and first aid training for members of NEMLEC’s SWAT and Regional Response Teams.

Shriners Auditorium, 99 Fordham Road, Willmington

WHAT: 

Tomorrow’s training, led by Armstrong SWAT Clinical Educator Stephen Wood, will provide all NEMLEC team members with the essential skills they need to assess and treat life-threatening blood loss.

The training will include both a lecture and hands-on instruction, with Wood teaching SWAT and RRT members how to apply a tourniquet in a situation that will closely mimic that of a real world incident response.

Armstrong’s NEMLEC SWAT medics will provide hands-on training with tourniquets during simulated massive bleeding scenarios to the NEMLEC SWAT/RRT members. Additionally, Armstrong has invited its partners from Lahey Clinic’s Emergency Medicine and Trauma Surgery staff to support the Armstrong NEMLEC SWAT medics. Lahey Clinic provides medical direction and oversight support for Armstrong Ambulance Service.

“This training is critical for law enforcement officers who work in these highly volatile situations,” Armstrong CEO Rich Raymond said. “While these skills could ultimately help members save the life of a fellow officer injured in a SWAT response, they also benefit members of the public, when these same officers are carrying out their day-to-day responsibilities responding to all kinds of medical emergencies.”

Wood is a full-time acute care nurse practitioner at Winchester Hospital’s Emergency Department and part-time educator and tactical medic at Armstrong. He also holds a master’s degree in toxicology, is a bio-ethics fellow at Harvard University, and nationally recognized expert and lecturer. Wood speaks about tactical medicine, the opioid epidemic, clandestine drug labs, and public health consequences and coordination regarding the human trafficking crisis, pre-hospital care and EMS systems.
