Maynard’s Zagster Bike Share Program Reopens at Mill & Main
MAYNARD — With spring now upon us, Town Administrator Greg Johnson is pleased to share that Maynard’s Zagster bike share program is back up and running for the season.
Maynard’s first station, sponsored by Mill & Main, allows riders to rent bikes for short-term use. Zagster offers annual memberships, as well as single-use options.
In conjunction with the town, Mill & Main will be the site of a Zagster grand reopening celebration on May 17 from noon to 2 p.m. The public is invited and there will be festivities and remarks from local and regional leadership including state Rep. Kate Hogan.
“A bike share is not only a great complement to town amenities, but also helps circulate potential new customers for our local businesses throughout the community,” Town Administrator Johnson said. “The connections made by the continuing enhancement of the Assabet River Rail Trail will allow riders from other communities to easily visit and enjoy all Maynard has to offer. We are grateful to Mill & Main for sponsoring this Zagster location.”
Bikes can be rented at one location and returned to another. Acton, Concord, Marlborough and Lexington also participate in the Zagster program, and there is a Zagster station at the South Acton Commuter Rail Station. Town Planner Bill Nemser noted that the program moved forward after a town-wide survey, an open house and community outreach indicated that there was overwhelming support for the addition of a bike sharing program in Maynard.
By capitalizing on the large employment center at Mill & Main, the Assabet River Rail Trail, local shopping options, the proximity to South Acton Commuter Rail Station and Maynard’s growth as an exciting cultural destination, Maynard is equipped with an additional economic development tool.
There are also opportunities for businesses, individuals or other entities to sponsor additional Zagster bike share stations in Maynard. The annual sponsorship cost for a five-bike station is $9,000, and sponsors will have advertising placed on both the rental stations and the bikes themselves. Funds generated by rider participation in the program go to the town, with Zagster retaining an administrative fee.
Free single-ride passes are available at the Office of Municipal Services in Town Hall, while supplies last.
“Now is the time to learn just how nice it can be to bike in Maynard,” Nemser said. “We’re very excited that the weather is beginning to warm up after what felt like a long winter, and we encourage people to head outside and enjoy all this town has to offer.”
For more information on the Zagster program contact Nemser at 978-897-1302.
