ANDOVER — Chief Michael Mansfield reports that Andover Fire Rescue responded Friday afternoon to a serious motor vehicle crash that shut down I-93.

Rescuers responded to I-93 Northbound just prior to River Road at 3:15 p.m. for a two-vehicle crash. An initial investigation indicates that a vehicle was stopped in the breakdown lane of I-93 Northbound when it was struck at a high rate of speed by another vehicle. The impact of the crash sent the previously stopped vehicle across the highway, and it ended in the left lane.

The occupants of the struck vehicle, a 5-year-old boy and his mother, sustained serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were also injured. All four people were transported by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital. The boy was later taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.

A large debris field was left on all lanes of the highway. All northbound lanes and one southbound lane were shut during the rescue and investigation efforts. Traffic was backed up for several miles, despite the generally low volume of commuters on the day after Thanksgiving.

In addition to Andover Fire Rescue and the Massachusetts State Police, the Methuen and Tewksbury Fire Departments and Lawrence General Hospital Advanced Life Support paramedics responded to the scene. The victims were transported by Andover, Tewksbury and Methuen ambulances.

The crash is under investigation by the State Police.
