NORTH SUTTON – Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to announce that Kearsarge High School senior Lily Magoon was selected as a finalist for her musical theater performance at a local music festival last month.

Magoon, a soprano, performed at a National Association of Teachers of Singing competition on Oct. 20 at Concord Community Music School Recital Hall, where she sang  “You’ve Got Possibilities” from the musical “It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Superman,” and “Something Good,” from the musical “Sound of Music.”

Founded in 1944, NATS is dedicated to encouraging the highest standard of vocal arts and promoting vocal education and research at all levels. Every year, the local chapter of NATS hosts two regional competitions for high school students, one for musical theater and another for art song composition, which is held in the spring. Students who participate are sponsored by their music teacher and the top six in each division are selected as finalists.

“To be a finalist among such a pool of talented young adults is a wonderful accomplishment,” said Julie Ness, who serves as Magoon’s voice teacher. “It validates the work the students have invested in this art form.”

This achievement is the culmination of many years of study – Magoon has been singing for the past nine years, and is a part of a new two-year musical theater training program that works with high school students and recent graduates to provide in-depth training for those looking to pursue a career in the arts.

“On behalf of the entire Kearsarge school district, we want to congratulate Lily for her accomplishment at the NATS competition,” Superintendent Feneberg said. “This is a great accomplishment and we’re happy that judges recognized Lily’s talent and years of hard work at this prestigious event.”

Check out Magoon at her upcoming performance as Wednesday Addams in Kearsarge High School’s fall musical “The Addams Family” on Nov. 9, 10 and 11.
