DURHAM — Superintendent James Morse is pleased to announce that Mast Way and Moharimet Elementary Schools will once again help students engage with science on a deeper level with Science Mondays.

Since Monday, Oct. 29, and occurring throughout November, students at both schools will have an opportunity to explore a variety of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) topics after school with the support of students from the University of New Hampshire’s LunaCats Robotics Team.

The events, which had taken place on Fridays in the past, will include activities like egg drops, trebuchet construction and two afternoons dedicated to robotics. The event will culminate with participants taking control of the LunaCats’ robots.

Oyster River Technology Integrators Susan Leifer and Sarah Curtain have spearheaded the Science Monday program.

“I’m so excited that our students will be able to dive deeper into science topics outside of the traditional classroom setting,” Superintendent Morse said. “Science Mondays will be a fun way for students to explore different topics, and I’m grateful that they have the chance to connect with UNH students and see what opportunities are out there for them if they pursue STEM throughout their lives.”

The UNH Lunacats is a team of UNH students from all majors and all grade levels. The goal of the team is to build a robot that will be able to go on an extraterrestrial surface and mine the material on it. The team competes in a NASA robotic mining competition against other teams from around the country.
