Fire at Middleborough Junkyard Extinguished

MIDDLEBOROUGH — Fire Chief Lance Benjamino and Police Chief Joseph Perkins report that a fire at a junkyard in Middleborough as been extinguished and the scene has been cleared.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., first responders were notified of a fire at Zion’s Auto Parts, 128 Bedford St.

When firefighters arrived, they found a large pile of scrap metal and tires that was on fire. The debris pile was about 100 yards long.

Fire departments from Bridgewater and Lakeville responded to assist.

Bedford Street (Route 18) was temporarily closed from Old Center Street to the Middleborough rotary for about two hours and has since been reopened.

The fire was fully extinguished at approximately 12:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious at this time.

Because of today’s high temperatures, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Rehab Unit was called to provide assistance to the firefighters. A mobile rehabilitation unit provided firefighters with cold water and air conditioning inside of the vehicle.

“Because there were rubber tires and other combustible materials the fire was smoldering for a while, which took longer to fully extinguish,” Chief Benjamino said. “It was a great job by everyone involved in containing and knocking down the fire in these extremely hot temperatures.”
