Bedford Police Notify Residents of Road Closure

Back River Road to be Closed Weekdays from Aug. 7 to Sept. 7

BEDFORD, N.H. — Chief John J. Bryfonski would like to notify Bedford residents and commuters that Back River Road will be closed to through traffic beginning today and continuing each weekday for about a month.

Back River Road will be closed from County Road to Smith Road while a water main construction project is ongoing. The road will only be accessible to emergency vehicles and school buses between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the construction period.

Vehicles will be detoured onto County Road, Liberty Hill Road and Smith Road during the hours that the road closure is active. To review a map of the detours click here.

Local traffic will be redirected to avoid the construction zones and drivers are asked to  seek alternate routes, if possible.

“We want to thank everyone for their patience while this project is completed,” Chief Bryfonski said. “More than 7,000 vehicles drive on this road each day. So, we want everyone to be aware of the project and the detour routes to help make things as easy as possible.”

In Bedford, drivers heading south on Back River Road will be directed to turn right on County Road, then left on Liberty Hill Road, left on Smith Road and then left to continue onto Back River Road.

From Merrimack heading north, traffic on Back River Road will be diverted left onto Smith Road, then right onto Liberty Hill Road, right onto County Road and then left back onto Back River Road.

Motorists should drive slow and use caution when traveling through the detour areas and the construction site.

There will be people directing traffic with flags on Back River Road to assist any residents that live on the road and those accessing the day camps on nearby Camp Road.

Back River Road will be open to normal traffic when construction is not ongoing.
