SHREWSBURY — Chief James Vuona is pleased to announce that Craig Mawdsley graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy last month.

Firefighter Mawdsley graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighting Training program Class 71. He was recognized along with 33 other graduates during a ceremony held on June 27 at the Department of Fire Services.

Additionally, state Rep. Hannah Kane presented Firefighter Mawdsley with a citation for his achievement on Monday, July 9 at Shrewsbury Fire Headquarters.

A Shrewsbury resident, Firefighter Mawdsley has been with the Shrewsbury Fire Department for a year and is now also pursuing his EMT certification.

“Firefighter Mawdsley has put in hundreds of hours of hard work to complete this course and I am proud of him for finishing such a rigorous program,” Chief Vuona said. “I look forward to continuing to watch him grow in his career as a firefighter and know he will continue to serve our community well.”

During the training, firefighters learned the basic skills they need to respond to fires, including how to contain and control them, public fire education, hazardous material incident mitigation, flammable liquids, stress management, confined space rescue techniques and rappelling.

To graduate, firefighters were required to complete 240 hours of training, all on nights and weekends, while demonstrating proficiency in life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation and fire attack in situations ranging from mailbox fires to multiple-floor or multi-room structural fires.
