Manchester-by-the-Sea Begins Repairs On Lincoln Street Pedestrian Bridge

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — Department of Public Works Director Charles Dam reports that the pedestrian bridge that connects the Manchester Essex Regional Middle/High School and the Memorial Elementary School will be under repair for the next two weeks.

Repairs to the 1972 bridge, which is located on Lincoln Street, will address damages that were the result of a vehicle hitting the bridge deck last year. Repair work has been delayed due to the time it has taken for the School District to reach an agreement with the vehicle driver’s insurance carrier regarding payment for the needed work.

Construction will begin on July 12 and is expected to be completed on July 24. During work, detours will be in place and the road will be closed to through traffic at the bridge only. Each school will still be accessible via Lincoln Street. The majority of work will take place in the evening hours, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.

In August, DPW will complete roadwork on Lincoln Street to provide for additional clearance under the bridge.

“We want to thank residents and community members for their patience and understanding as we complete work on the Lincoln Street pedestrian bridge,” Dam said. “This is a heavily traveled area, for both pedestrians and drivers, and the work we are completing this summer will better ensure the safety of those who walk and drive through that area.”
