Dr. Michael Tracy Appointed Principal of Winthrop Elementary School

MELROSE — Superintendent Cyndy Taymore is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Tracy has been appointed principal of the Winthrop Elementary School.

He officially stepped into the position on July 1.

Tracy previously served as the principal of Cape Elizabeth Middle School in Maine from 2013-2017, where, in addition to overseeing 550 students, he implemented a new master schedule to allow for increased academic and enrichment learning and support for staff.

Prior to his four years at the Cape Elizabeth Public Schools, Tracy served as the principal of Newbury Elementary School from 2010-2013. He was also principal of Ralph B. O’Maley Middle School in Gloucester from 2005-2010, after having served as the assistant principal from 2000-2005.

Tracy got his start in education in 1993 at the Buckley Country Day School in New York, where he was a sixth grade teacher for math, reading, history and language arts. In 1997, he moved back to his home state of Massachusetts to serve as the English teacher for grades six, seven and nine at the Shore Country Day school in Beverly.

Similar to the work being done in Melrose, Tracy has led schools in the use of data to improve curriculum, instruction and student outcomes. He has implemented tiered systems of support, and facilitated the implementation of social emotional learning strategies.

“Dr. Tracy understands the needs and expectations of leading a school district with the academic rigor we offer students in Melrose,” Superintendent Taymore said. “I believe that Dr. Tracy’s experience and skills will enable him to quickly assess the strengths and needs of the Winthrop School and to build upon the strong work done by our faculty over the past several years.”

Tracy holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Colby College, a master’s degree in education from Lesley College and a doctorate of education from Boston College.
