Gloucester Firefighters Respond After Fisherman Injured Off Shore
GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department responded after a fisherman suffered a leg injury while working on a boat off shore this afternoon.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., Gloucester firefighters were dispatched to the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Gloucester following a report of an injured fisherman. Upon arrival, four firefighters boarded a Coast Guard vessel and were taken approximately 12 miles offshore to another Coast Guard vessel.
Upon arrival to the second vessel, firefighters located a male in his 70s who had suffered a leg injury and was bleeding, but was conscious and alert. The man reported that he had been struck by a cable while setting a lobster trap.
His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Firefighters were able to control the bleeding and provide treatment as the Coast Guard vessel returned to shore. Upon their return to shore, the Gloucester Fire Department transported the man via ambulance to an area hospital for further treatment.
