Melrose High School Junior Earns Spot in All-State Music Festival

MELROSE — Choral Director Kimberly Piper is pleased to announce that Melrose High School junior Lucy Fleming earned a coveted spot in the All-State Music Festival.
Fleming, a soprano, performed as a member of the chorus during a three-day event on March 1-3 at Symphony Hall in Boston.
She was the only student from Melrose to sing in the approximately 200 member chorus ensemble. The achievement is the culmination of many years of study — Fleming has been a part of the Melrose choral program since fourth grade and has participated in independent voice and piano lessons since the sixth grade.
To qualify for the All-State Music Festival, students had to first audition for and be selected to perform in the winter Northeastern Senior District Music Festival. At that event, performers then had to score in the top 50 percent, and were judged on rhythmic and melodic accuracy, intonation, diction, tone quality, articulation, interpretation and sight reading.
Fleming was one of 450 musicians that was selected from the 1,000 who auditioned statewide to be a part of the All-State Music Festival, where members of the chorus, band and orchestra performed.
“The All-State Music Festival is extremely competitive and is the highest recognition for a high school music student,” Piper said. “We’re so pleased that Lucy’s talents were able to shine at such a prestigious event.”
