ROCKLAND — Principal Marilyn H. Smith kissed a cow in front of over 140 students from R. Stewart Esten Elementary School in Rockland this week.

On Thursday, May 31, 146 students gathered at Open Space Farm, on Summer Street in Rockland, where they watched their principal plant a smooch on a cow named Johanne.

The cattle kiss was Principal Smith’s way of holding up her end of a challenge that she made to students to get them to read books over April vacation.

“Johanne was very sweet and the kids got a real kick out of it. I’m proud of the students for doing their reading over April vacation,” Principal Smith said. “Thank you to the owners of the farm, Wayne and Richard DelPrete, for welcoming us onto their farm and showing us around.”
