Taunton Police Remind Residents of Social Host Law

TAUNTON — With senior prom tonight, Chief Edward Walsh would like to remind Taunton residents about the state’s social host law.

Parents and adults can face fines, jail time, or both if they provide alcohol to individuals under the age of 21. Minors can also face punishment for hosting parties at their parent’s homes without their knowledge.

“If you are hosting a party after prom and the guests are drinking alcohol underage, it is unsafe and against the law,” Chief Walsh said. “We want everyone to enjoy their special night safely and responsibly.”

State law says that anyone who provides alcohol to a person under 21 years old can be fined up to $2,000 and face up to a year in prison.
