Athol Police Department Names New School Resource Officer

ATHOL — Chief Russell T. Kleber is pleased to announce that the Athol Police Department has named Officer Thomas Cummings as the school resource officer for the Athol-Royalston School District.

Officer Cummings is a lifelong resident who will now serve as the department’s liaison to the same schools he attended as a student from kindergarten through his senior year of high school.

Following his graduation from Athol High School, Officer Cummings attended Castleton University in Vermont, where he played for the baseball team and earned a criminal justice degree. He then returned to Athol, joining the police department as a dispatcher in 2007 before becoming a full-time officer in 2011.

In his new role, Officer Cummings will work closely with Athol school staff and students in order to build upon the department’s relationships within the community.

“Officer Cummings is a dedicated member of the Athol community, and I’m pleased to see him take on this role,” Chief Kleber said. “His deep knowledge and experience with the school district and growing up in Athol will make him a great resource for students.”
