East Bridgewater DPW Continues Improvement Projects at Youth Sports Complex

EAST BRIDGEWATER — Department of Public Works Director John B. Haines is pleased to announce that the East Bridgewater DPW recently completed a project to replace a retaining wall at the John L. Silva Athletic Complex and is continuing to make improvements to the snack stand.

The project replaced a rotting wooden retaining wall with an aesthetically pleasing concrete block wall between the snack bar and Brewster Fuller Field.

Atop the retaining wall is a new chain-link fence and area where parents can watch their children play baseball and softball.

“Our Highway and Grounds Division installed 70-feet of concrete blocks and built the wall up six-feet high,” Director Haines said. “On top of the wall we replaced the old wooden railing with a fence that allows parents to be up higher and closer to the field. It will provide a much better view of the games.”

Funding for the project was appropriated at the Annual Town Meeting last year through the Recreation Commission. The project was a joint-venture between the DPW, Recreation Commission and East Bridgewater Little League.

Demolition of the old wall began at the end of August last year and the project was completed at the end of November. A new deck was added onto the snack stand over the past few months.

The next step will be to build a handicap ramp that will lead from the parking lot up to the snack stand and bathrooms.

The project is one of many that have been undertaken by the DPW in recent years to refurbish the fields at the complex. The town helps to maintain the fields, which sit between Church and Hobart streets. The complex consists of four youth baseball/softball fields, two basketball courts, a soccer field and an outdoor street hockey rink.

“Now that springtime has arrived, parents and players will notice a completely new look at the snack bar,” Director Haines said. “Once the ramp is done, we’re proud to say the snack bar will be completely handicap accessible.”

Director Haines would like to give special thanks to local contractor G. Lincoln & Sons, who built the snack bar deck originally 30 years ago and reconstructed it this time, and also Tom Williams, owner of Superior Pool Services, who donated labor and equipment to assist with site work and wall construction.
