GLTS Students Place in SkillsUSA District Competition

ANDOVER — Superintendent John Lavoie is pleased to announce that following the SkillsUSA district competition, five Greater Lawrence Technical School students will be moving on to the next round.

On March 15, 123 students put their skills to the test in the first round of the competition, which was held at Greater Lowell Technical School. Those who earned gold or silver medals qualified for the SkillsUSA state competition on April 26-28 in Marlborough.

During the district competition, students in grades 10-12 were broken into their trades of choice to compete in solo challenges that tested their abilities.

“I want to commend all students who participated in this competition,” Superintendent Lavoie said. “This event requires students to put all aspects of their technical area of study to use in order to complete the challenges at hand. We wish the best of luck to our five competitors who are moving on to the next round.”

Gold:

Senior Leonardo Paulino, of Lawrence – Sheet Metal
Senior Juana Lopez, of North Andover – Restaurant Service. She also received a perfect score on her employability test.
Senior Jennifer Figuereo, of Lawrence – First Aid/CPR

Silver:
Junior Christian Rodriguez, of Lawrence – Collision Repair Technology
Junior Laura Mateo, of Lawrence – Restaurant Service

Bronze:
Senior Ryan Ouellette, of Methuen – Computer Numerical Controlled Milling
Junior Ashlin Reyes, of Lawrence – Cosmetology Under 500
Senior Digna Cruz, of Lawrence – Electrical Construction Wiring
Sophomore Joaldi Feliz, of Lawrence – Power Equipment Technology

Sophomore Ahlyia Leclerc, of Methuen, who is in the biotechnology technical area of study, was voted as GLTS’ candidate to run for a SkillsUSA state officer position. To earn this nomination, Leclerc had to complete a written exam and excel in an interview held at the district competition.
