BRIDGEWATER — Town Manager Michael Dutton, Police Chief Christopher D. Delmonte and Fire Chief Tom Levy report that the Town of Bridgewater has opened a warming center for residents, as National Grid notified the town earlier today that an extended power outage is anticipated throughout southeastern Massachusetts.
The Williams School, located at 200 South St. opened this afternoon as warming center. According to national grid, 98 percent of Bridgewater is currently without power.
Crews are making damage assessments in all areas of town at this time. Residents are advised to prepare themselves for the possibility of extended power outages.
“This was a storm of historic proportions, and while we are used to severe weather in New England, this kind of storm does not come often,” Town Manager Dutton said. “Your emergency departments are making every attempt to assist residents and businesses impacted by the power outages and storm damage, and we appreciate the patience and consideration that everyone has shown so far.”
While not on the coast and not subject to the historic tidal flooding seen elsewhere, the Bridgewater area saw the highest reported rain totals from the March 2 Nor’Easter. According to weather spotters, East Bridgewater received 5.74 inches of rain, the highest reported rain total in Massachusetts.
“We encourage anyone who needs to warm up or have a hot cup of coffee to come to the Williams School,” said Chief Levy, who is also Bridgewater’s Emergency Management Director. “While there may not be the snow on the ground we are used to seeing after severe New England weather events, the rain and wind have caused extensive damage. Banding together as a community, we will get through this weather event and look forward to warmer, sunnier days.”
Chief Delmonte encourages residents to check on friends and neighbors. If someone needs assistance, please call the Bridgewater Police Department at 508-697-6118.
Those needing transportation to the warming center should call 508-531-1380.
As always, residents are urged to call 911 if they are experiencing an emergency.
